Nat Turner (Pb)
Published in Paperback by Millbrook Press (July, 1994)
Author: Tracy Barrett
Average review score:

A informative book about the Virginia Slave Revolt of 1831
Tracy Barrett's juvenile history of "Nat Turner and the Slave Revolt" tells the story of one of the most controversial persons in the history of slavery. As Barrett points out in her introduction, some people considered Turner a hero while others considered him a murdering madman. Barrett tells of Turner's live as a slave and of the successful slave revolt that founded the country of Haiti, as well as minor but unsuccessful slave rebellions in the United States. Unlike most slaves Turner was taught to read and became interested in religion. Eventually he was considered a preacher and a prophet by slaves in that area. Although he succeeded in running away from his master, Turner returned 30 days later claiming the Spirit had ordered his return. From then on he planned to punish the slave owners for the sin of slavery. Barrett provides the grim details of the Virginia Slave Revolt of 1831, not shying away from the fact that many of the white victims were children. The estimates are that about 60 whites and as many as 200 blacks were killed by the time Turner was captured, tried and hung. Barrett ends up calling Nat Turner's rebellion to be the "first war against slavery." Sidebars in this book tell about The Dream of Freedom and Harriet Tubman. This book in the Gateway Civil Right series is illustrated with etchings, drawings, paintings and photographs from the early 19th-century. Students interested in learning more about Nat Turner during Black History Month will find this to be one of the more informative books on this subject for this age group. Barrett deals with this difficult event in the nation's history in a straight forward manner that students will appreciate.

Nat Turner's Tragic Search for Freedom: From Deprivation to Vengeance
Published in Paperback by Trafford (August, 2002)
Authors: Catherine Hermary-Vieille and Robin Orr Bodkin
Average review score:

A New and Vibrant Perspective on the Life of Nat Turner
This book humanizes an historic figure in American history that has often be demonized into a stick figure of terror and senseless hatred. This is far from the truth,as French Author Catherine Hermary-Vielle (as translated into English by Robin Orr Bodkin) superbly demonstrates in her novel.

Turner is explained in the light of the times and social milieu in which he lived. The reasons for the revolt that terrorized rural Virginia in the 1830's are clearly detailed and elucidated to the reader.

The book is a fast-paced novel that will keep any reader who is interested in the pre-Civil War underpinnings of slavery totally engrossed.

I highly recommend this book.

Nature and Other Writings (Shambhala Pocket Classics)
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (October, 1994)
Authors: Ralph Waldo Emerson and Peter Turner

Nature and Other Writings
Emerson is a genious. His words in this small edition are just as sweet and easily accessable. It is handy to have a small version to keep close at all times. Everytime I look at the night sky I think of a quote of Emerson, "But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile." That alone is a reason to own the work of Emerson.

Nettie's Trip South
Published in School & Library Binding by Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing (March, 1987)
Authors: Ronald Himler and Ann Turner
Average review score:

How true.
I think that this book gives a true to life account of slavery from a little girl's perspective. If only everyone was as wise as she was during the slave years, then there wouldn't have been any slavery.

Look At This!
I've travelled New Mexico extensively and love each new scene. Upon opening this book I was flooded with the sense of being back in the places that brought me so much joy the first time around. The pictures are fabulous and convey so much of the true atmosphere found only in the high mountain desert. I will make a present of this book more than once.

The New World (Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets)
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (August, 1985)
Author: Frederick Turner
Average review score:

The most remarkable epic poem of this century
It is rare book that can be called unique. Frederick Turner's The New World is an epic poem about the future and the past, about democracy, fundamentalism, human nature, heroism, evil, honor and love. All this and great science fiction fantasy too! The language of the poem is wonderfully rich but easily readable, written in an iambic pentameter that ranges from conversational to grand. I can't recommend a book more highly. I am embarassed to say that I've read it five or six times.
